My Plea to Stop Hazara Genocide
By Mohammad Zaki Zaki
Lost in dark and polluted weather
I wander up and down city streets
seeking peace and security.
But my mind is troubled
by another massacre
another genocide
against the most open minded
the most knowledgeable parts of Afghanistan,
another disaster against a peaceful place.
Afghanistan is not safe.
The province is not safe.
The capital is not safe.
Our house is not safe.
Fallen corpses scattered around our homes
Ten targeted attacks in mosques, hospitals
sporting clubs, wedding halls
holy shrines and crowded streets.
Where are you God?
Help this condemned nation
Don’t allow the enemy
to make our lives more complicated
more miserable and perilous
more ruined and more meaningless.
Dear God, you promised to help the poor.
You promised to punish cruelty.
Where are you now?
Don’t you see what is happening in this country?
Yes, it was safe for a short time
but again we witness the murders of innocent
families who have committed no crime.
As an Afghan I am suffering.
Ashamed, hopeless about the destiny
for the next generation.
Once being Afghan was something to be proud of
now it’s a stain of dishonor
that perplexes me as this Civil War continues.
Here the rivers are red, smelling of blood.
I am ashamed I was born in this country
that I stay in a country
whose backbone is broken.
I had hoped to make this country
a welcome place
but it is the opposite.
But still I write
from within a dark room
its window is cracked
to show the world
our nation is being ignored
Please help us God, give a hand.
Dear human rights activists
can you really witness calamities
and ignore our pains?
Must we all wait for the next disaster?
