To My Mother

A poem by Amir S.

A graveyard in Kabul

Hello Mother, it’s your son
Thanks for all you’ve done
Love? That every mother does
Love? That every mother has
You made sacrifices
I’ll never repay
But I try to be as you raised me
Humanity is meant
to be kind to other people
and creatures
To be cruel is racist
It’s kindness that differentiates us

Dear Mother, every woman
in Afghanistan
suffers because of war
You secured our home
during years of violence
Kept your humor
and courage
You insisted we hold on
to our morals

Dearest Mother
I think of you always
since you passed away
Like a soldier
on the frontline
you’re my hero
for lifetime
